Paying Climate Change Levy you don't owe?

Care homes, charities, academies, small shops and cafés, and metal and mineral processors are often charged the levy when they shouldn't be, and can claim back four years. A charity care home can be owed more than £46,000. Check a site in a minute, free, and get the letter to send your supplier. Every plan checks all your sites for you.

Example: 400,000 kWh of electricity and 900,000 kWh of gas a year, VAT not reclaimable, at each year's main rate from October 2022. Rules from HMRC Excise Notice CCL1/3. We aren't tax advisers and don't make claims for you.

Carbon reporting, explained

Where does a carbon footprint come from?

Every business's emissions fall into three groups, called scopes. Tap the picture to see what goes where, and which bills you need.

Tap anything in the picture.

Scope 1

Scope 1: what you burn and what leaks

Fuel burned on your premises and in vehicles you own or lease, plus refrigerant that escapes from air conditioning. You control it directly.

Where the figures come from
Gas bills, fuel cards, oil deliveries and air-con service records.
Who asks for it
Every carbon report asks for it: SECR, Carbon Reduction Plans and customer questionnaires.

Example figures use the UK government's 2026 conversion factors (DESNZ), the same ones our reports use.

Try it

From your bill to tonnes of CO₂e

Pick a fuel and slide to roughly what you use in a year. This is the same sum our reports do, with the same government figures.

What's on the bill?

kWh a year

Add up the kWh on a year of electricity bills.

That makes about

5.24 tCO₂e

Scope 2: energy you buy

Each square is 100 kg CO2e.

The same as driving 19,620 miles in an average car.

UK government (DESNZ) 2026 factor: 0.13096 kg CO2e per kWh (7_400_4000_5_1) Scope 1 or 2 only: producing and delivering the fuel, and grid losses, add a little more in Scope 3. A full report counts those too.

How it works

From bills to a signed plan

Three steps, most of them done for you. See the whole tour →

  1. 1

    Add what you already have

Type in a year of bills, or import a spreadsheet. We guide you to the right unit and factor for gas, electricity, fleet, flights, hotels, waste and more.

  2. 2

    Fill the Scope 3 gaps

Send suppliers a secure link to share their emissions. No account needed on their side; you review before anything counts.

  3. 3

    Publish your reports

Set a baseline and target, list your reduction measures, get director sign-off, and print your Carbon Reduction Plan and SECR disclosure.

Works with Xero, Sage Accounting and FreeAgent. Connect your accounts to estimate Scope 3 from what you spend, or upload a purchase ledger export from any other accounting package.

What you hand over

A report buyers and auditors recognise

Click the numbers to walk round a Carbon Reduction Plan or an SECR report, and see what each part is for.

Part 1 of 6

Commitment to net zero

One sentence committing the business to net zero by 2050 at the latest. Buyers check it is there before reading anything else.

Numbers you can defend

Buyers and auditors increasingly check carbon figures. Every line in Carbon Recycling records the activity, the DESNZ factor, its year and ID, so you can show exactly how each tonne was calculated.

  • Factor year chosen by when the activity happened, with bills split across years by day
  • Transmission and distribution losses and well-to-tank included by default
  • Radiative forcing on flights, as DESNZ recommends
  • Renewable tariffs handled in market-based Scope 2, never by hiding location-based
  • Offsets never counted as reductions

Prices you can see before you talk to anyone

Both reports on every plan, no charge per company report, and no demo needed to get a number.

Questions

Do I need a Carbon Reduction Plan?

If you bid for central government contracts worth more than £5m a year, PPN 006 asks you to provide one, covering Scope 1, 2 and five Scope 3 categories, with a commitment to net zero by 2050. Many councils and large buyers ask for the same thing in smaller tenders.

Which conversion factors do you use?

The UK Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting published by DESNZ, loaded straight from the official files for every year from 2002 to 2026, so older baseline years are covered too (DESNZ's sets for 2002 to 2011 cover electricity and heat only). Each entry uses the set for the reporting year its activity falls in, and shows the factor ID so it can be checked.

Is it suitable for SECR?

Yes. It produces the SECR table of energy use, Scope 1, 2 and transport Scope 3 emissions, an intensity ratio, a prior-year comparison and the methodology statement, ready for your directors' report.

Does it connect to my accounting software?

Yes. It works with Xero, Sage Accounting and FreeAgent: connect once and we read your purchase ledger (we never change anything) to estimate Scope 3 from spend, using the government's spend-based factors. Using another package? Upload its purchase ledger export instead.

What about carbon offsets?

We focus on measuring and reducing first, which is what PPN 006 and SECR ask for. Offsets are never counted as reductions in your reports. A vetted offsetting service is planned for later.
